A mass is not a sightseeing visit

Respect the service and the people who pray.

Be respectful

People come to pray. Switch off your phone, stay quiet and do not walk around taking photos during the service.

Dress for church

Appropriate clothing is expected. Trousers and skirts must reach at least mid-thigh, and there is no swimwear or see-through clothing. Take off your hat inside.

Masses in the crypt

The crypt is a separate space, and it is not in the standard ticket.

The crypt of the Sagrada Família with its vaulted ceiling

The crypt was completed in 1889. Gaudí is buried there, in the chapel of Our Lady of Mount Carmel. Some masses and prayers take place in the crypt, which is one of the few ways to enter it.

The dates are listed in the basilica's mass calendar. The calendar was not filled in when this page was written, so the times for 2026 are not confirmed. The basilica's website pointed to an international evening mass in the crypt on 19 October 2026. Check the calendar for the date. Read more on the interior of the basilica.

Combining mass with a visit

The regular visiting hours and the mass times do not overlap neatly.

Regular visitors enter from 10:30 on Sundays and from 9:00 on weekdays. The Sunday mass at 9:00 therefore comes before the sightseeing day starts. On Saturdays the basilica closes to visitors at 18:00, so the 20:00 evening mass falls after normal visiting hours. See the opening hours for each season.

A good plan is to attend mass and then book a ticket for a later slot on another day. If you attend on the same day, book your visit separately and keep in mind that a ticket is valid only for the date and time you chose. If you arrive late, you will not be let in. The quiet hour from 9:00 to 10:00 every day is for visitors, not a mass.

The nave is the same space you see on a normal visit, with its tree-like columns and coloured glass. You can read about it on the page for the interior. Take time to look up before you sit down, and remember that the focus of the hour is the service.

Entry rules for everyone

The general rules of the basilica also apply when you come for mass.

Your bag is checked at the entrance. There are no lockers for suitcases, so do not bring one. Dangerous objects and drinks from outside are not allowed, food is not allowed, and you can drink only outside the building. Smoking and protests are forbidden. Tripods are not permitted unless you have press accreditation.

The nearest metro station is Sagrada Família on lines L2 and L5. The entrance for individuals is at the Nativity facade on Carrer de la Marina. More details are on the getting there page. Times can change for special events inside the temple, so check again a few days before.

What should I wear to mass?

Trousers and skirts must reach at least mid-thigh, with no swimwear or see-through clothing, and no hat inside. Appropriate clothing is expected.
